Keeping it sweet Where ground water is too acid, as it often is in areas where a private water supply is the best option, it must be neutralised. Amos' standard pH (acidity) control unit is a cylinder containing a limestone-based medium mixed according to the client's water analysis. The water percolates through the medium and is returned to a neutral balance. If there is an excess of iron or manganese, common problems where water is acid, another type of filtration equipment is required. Impurities drawn from natural rocks can include compounds of lead, aluminium, copper and arsenic. In addition, nitrates and nitrites are sometimes found in ground water as residues of agricultural practices. All of these require careful selection of filtration equipment. It is important that water is properly analysed to ascertain the precise nature of a supply. Amos can suggest laboratories where this work can be carried out, and then supply equipment and media to treat the water to correct any problem that is revealed.

Acidity and chemical balance
The supply from a borehole pump percolates through the medium and is properly balanced before being fed to the household distribution system. The medium is renewed or flushed to waste at intervals to maintain performance. |
